Why Soil?
“As part of my training on regenerative practices, I took a course on Soil Advocacy from Kiss the Ground. I learned that soil is:
The essential foundation and matrix for all life on land.
The source of 95 percent of food that is produced.
The base of all on-land diversity.
The reason we have clean water sources.
The most biodiverse ecosystem on the planet.
A larger carbon pool than the atmosphere and biosphere combined.
The most scalable solution and best carbon sink, with many additional benefits.” Jean Regenerate Your Reality Book
Building healthy soil through biodiversity, fungi, bacteria, and mycelium brings more prosperity to our farmers, our communities, and ultimately our planet. Just like fungi—which are everywhere and working all the time to decompose all matter—life, death, and rebirth are part of the cycle of existence.
Prepare and Build the Soil
Building soil is the foundation of our garden's nutrients. First, we start making beds with organic matter. We ask our neighbors to share their yard waste with us. We start piling slowest decomposers like logs first, then branches and sticks.
Adding layers of sand, soil from the forest and compost and lastly leaves to keep the new soil moist. By building healthy soil we are growing more nutrient rich foods. We water and let the soil sit for a few weeks to decompose.
Plant a Garden
Transplant seedlings and plant beans directly in the soil.
Make a hole and add compost to the soil. Water the transplanted seedling.
Harvest from Garden for Teas and Meals
By connecting to your food source even just a few herbs, greens, and vegetable it help your health and connection to the planet.
When we accept the natural cycles of life, we start to see the interdependence of everything more clearly. We see and appreciate the bacteria that help us fight disease, the mycelium that runs beneath us, and the soils that nourish us. They are all part of the cycle of nature—of life itself.
May we accept that we are evolving; may we easefully shed our old selves to rebirth and blossom into radiant beings.
We have the ability to choose the path we walk and the life we live. Life goes by quickly, and we can choose to make it the kind of life we want to live. We can actively make each day great by practicing our passions and enjoying the dance of life. No matter what, we will all die in the end, returning to the soils. That is the natural cycle of life.
The question is, when you return to the earth, will you leave the world better than you found it?
“The meaning of life is just to be alive. It is so plain and so obvious and so simple, and yet, everyone rushes around in a great panic as if it were necessary to achieve something beyond themselves.”—Alan Watts
